Why This Mama is Chemical Free

I was newly pregnant and, like most terrified mothers-to-be, I was relying on Doctor Google to give me all the answers on how to navigate this whole pregnancy thing. I researched everything about the impending birth of my child, what to eat/not eat while pregnant, and what ingredients in my daily products might be harmful to my growing baby.

There are so many things we are told to stay away from, or have in moderation, that it can be overwhelming! For me, I knew that the only thing I could stomach was carbs, so I was not about to give up my bagels for vegetables, but I did know that I could raid the products I use on a daily basis and give this kid the best chance to not absorb all the chemicals I use on my body. That was a compromise I could make! And I am so glad I did.

After looking into all of my daily products (makeup, face wash and moisturizer, body wash, shampoo, lotion, deodorant, and the list goes on!) I was disgusted with what I found. All of my makeup had some sort of animal bi-product in it… you heard that right… animal bi-product!! That means that the stuff they won’t even put in hot dogs I was putting on my face EVERY DAY! No wonder my eyes itched when I would wear eyeliner and eye shadow, it probably had some nasty part of an animal that I am most likely allergic to as one of the main ingredients. And it’s no surprise to me now that my eyelashes would FALL OUT every single night when I washed my face. I would have clumps of mascara with eyelashes attached on my wash cloth and think nothing of it.

My makeup wasn’t the worst part, but maybe the most nausea inducing. All of my lotions, face creams, body wash, and hair products have parabens in them which are linked to cancer. CANCER! I was putting liquid cancer on my body every single day without batting an eye. Not to mention that most deodorant has aluminum (and parabens), which has also been linked to cancer. To make sure I didn’t smell like a homeless person, I was putting products known to cause cancer next to my breasts, which happen to be where most women gets cancer. Think that’s a coincidence? I don’t!

Now there are times where some chemicals maybe be a necessary evil (like after your whole family has the flu and the only way to be sure everything is clean is to use bleach), but I try to avoid the unnecessary ones, like anything that goes on or in my body. The day I went through my products looking to eliminate anything that might harm my growing baby, or myself, was one of the most eye-opening days of my life. And once I trashed all the liquid cancer and animal bi-product nastiness, I had to figure out what I was going to use from here on out. I started researching the best products out there and came across Arbonne (check out my blog, Why Arbonne). My step-sister is an Arbonne consultant and had been trying to get me to try it for years, but I didn’t think it was necessary, until it became extremely necessary! I called her up and ordered everything from new makeup, hair care products, lotions, face cream, deodorant and more. It has been a life changer for me and I wouldn’t give these products up for anything.
